Some time ago several people asked me how to grow sprouts and this led to the creation of :
TIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING.

My intention is to keep adding suggestions and information about a broad range of activities
around the home and garden, with the hope that more people will utilise the resources in their
immediate environment to improve the quality of their lives.
So, give it a try.....you might be surprised just how easy it is!

How do you grow SPROUTS on your kitchen bench?
  • Not all sprouts grow well in the kitchen as some need soil to grow their roots.
  • Find a very large clean jar (storage jar size is good). Next find some thin cotton fabric or cheesecloth and cut a square
of fabric large enough to cover the jar and be held in place with a rubber band.
  • Into the jar place a small amount of mung bean seeds (hard green seeds) and green/brown lentils. (Buy them from a health food store so you can buy organic seed if you prefer.) This combination of seeds sprout at roughly the same rate and will expand enormously (up to 6 or 10 times the amount of seed you put into the jar) so don't be fooled into putting too many seeds into the jar!
  • starting sprouts
  • Fill the jar with water (preferably clean filtered water or fresh rainwater) and leave it sitting overnight or during the day. This initial soaking period is vital to get moisture into the seeds so they can sprout.
  • After soaking the seeds for 8-12 hours, drain the water off through the cheesecloth, and leave the jar lying down on the kitchen drainer (so that any excess water can get out of the jar). Cover the jar with a cloth or tea towel to keep it dark...and leave it undistrubed until the end of the day.
  • Now we come to the daily ritual. Every morning and evening fill the jar with water to rinse the seeds and drain it off...leaving the jar lying down and covered on the kitchen drainer.
  • sprouts finished
  • Within a day or two you will see signs of sprouting (if nothing happens the seeds are not viable and will turn into a smelly soggy mass...so put them into the compost heap or dig them into the garden). Around day 3 or 4 the jar should be quite full of sprouted seeds. Give them a final rinse, shaking out the excess water....then remove the cheesecloth, put the lid back on the jar and store in the refridgerator.
  • The sprouts should last a good week in the fridge.....and if you enjoyed them you may want to start the process again
as you near the bottom of the jar.
If you have two identical jars with interchangeable lids this whole process is very easy and you can have sprouts ready
    to eat all the time.
